The federal government’s sustainability efforts are driven primarily by statutory requirements (e.g., the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007) and “greening” Executive Orders. With sustainability goals in myriad areas – including greenhouse gases, energy/water efficiency, and sustainable building design – federal agencies grapple with reconciling their organizational structures and missions with environmental protection and sustainability.
